Suffern urban development protested

SUFFERN - A group has organized in protest of a village plan for condominiums on Orange Avenue.

The Stop Overbulding Suffern Coalition, a group of about 15 people, mostly living near the proposed Orange Avenue development areas, also cites other planned condominium projects in and around the village as a concern.

A petition is to be submitted next week to the village board, asking it to abandon the urban renewal plan that could put 315 condominiums between 120 Orange Ave. and East Maple Avenue.

One concern has been over the prospect of the village imposing eminent domain powers to acquire property for the project.

Mayor John Keegan and Deputy Mayor Dagan LaCorte said that eminent domain would only be used in the first section - 120 Orange Avenue to Chestnut Street - and that the remaining two areas would be subject to negotiations between the property owners and the eventual developer.

The village has no developer at this time.
